GLASS SIREN STUDIO - ABSTRACT SILKSCREEN ART

FREEHAND SILKSCREEN ART

By Damon Roberts

FREEHAND SILKSCREEN ART

More Roots Reggae business from my archive. This was a large scale piece produced with freehand silkscreen printing techniques. The composition was built up with layer upon layer of heavy acrylic paint.

Some components of these layers were overpainted by hand using a rag roller to help distess the imagery further before applying the more defined foreground layers. This piece was sold upon completion.

I've produced an extensive body of Reggae Sound System themed work over the years. For more examples check the following link > Here.

I have a few limited edition SubDub / Sound System themed silkscreen prints editions available to purchase  >  Contact Studio.

PRINTMAKING STUDIO

By Damon Roberts

PRINTMAKING STUDIO

This is where all the action happens on the printmaking front. Very little space in this studio so when it came to progressing to a better quality printing press i ended up having to engineer one myself to fit the space exactly.

I've racked up all the wall space to accommodate all the inks, binders and chemicals that i need for printmaking. Prints are hung to dry above the printing press to help maximise on the space.

The studio is getting ever closer to completion. However at the moment i still consider it a work in progess. I'll photograph the other side of the studio when it's finished.

Fully adjustable 'One Arm Bandit' style printing press with aluminium vacuum bed which holds the sheets i'm printing in place via an industial suction fan.

SUBDUB 25 YEARS FLYER ART

By Damon Roberts

SUBDUB 25 YEARS FLYER ART

This is a selection of flyer art i've created for SubDub in Leeds. It is one of the longest running reggae sound system events in the U.K. It's now in it 25th year. I've produced every single flyer for the event.

SubDub's visual identity has developed over the years. The flyers often feature heavily processed juxstaposed imagery loaded with grain and texture.

Having produced this body of work has led into me working on various album covers and music releated projects over the years.

Although the artwork is been digitally produced i always tried to create something with really organic feel.

Having a good level of create control over the flyer designs afforded me the opportunity to really experiment. In a way they have been a test bed for graphic ideas and treatments which fed into my silkscreen productions.

More SubDub flyer art examples can be found here.

ULTRA VIOLET EXPOSURES

By Damon Roberts

ULTRA VIOLET EXPOSURES

The screens i use for printmaking are essentially a stencil made with a photo sensitive emulsion in the darkroom conditions.

Artwork is printed on a transparent film which is then transferred onto the screen using ultra violet light. The excess emulsion is then washed off. This creates a high - resolution printable stencil which you can see an example of below.

More dark room shots below showing the exposure process.

FILM STAGE ABSTRACTS

By Damon Roberts

FILM STAGE ABSTRACTS

A selection of film positives from the printmaking process. These show the individual component layers of various print releases that i've produced.

When producing print editions i have to create one unique film and screen per colour. It's quite a time consuming process.

The two films below are from the A.M.X duotone print releases. The heavier looking base layer film is on the left and the sharper foreground film is on the right. More about my Duo-Tone print releases here.

Below - two more Duo-Tone film positives from the metalic Test Tones print releases.
